Despite having played both games as a child and young man, I'm a little ashamed to admit that it has taken me the best part of seventy years to work out the fundamental difference between the two games.

Put simple, the answer lies in the tackle.

If a rugby player has been tackled, he tries his very best to remain on his feet as long as possible. In Association Football, however, the complete opposite seems to have become the norm; to the extent that players often start throwing themselves to the ground even before the tackle has taken place. Shame on them.
