Following the commendable performance by the players and supporters of Crawley Town Football Club at Old Trafford, I've been rather surprised by the quite vehement reaction from certain elements to the club's relationship with The Sun Newspaper.

In making this observation, I was initially inclined to use the word 'disappointed' rather than 'surprised' by the reaction. However, I recognise I haven't been close enough to the place of my birth in recent times to experience the strength of feeling which exist as a consequence of the ill-informed comments the newspaper printed following the Hillsborough disaster.

Accordingly, accepting there is no doubt these sentiments are sincere, I'm writing this blog in the somewhat unlikely hope that someone might explain - or justify - to me why the players and the supporters of the Sussex team should be held accountable for decisions made by their board of directors - or whomsoever is responsible for gaining sponsorship for their team.

I'm not sure anyone should be having a go at Crawley T simply for accepting the sponsorship of The Sun. After all, the experience of people in the south of England regarding The Sun, is much different to those on Merseyside. However, make no mistake, feelings still run very highly about The Sun in Liverpool and environs, and anything related to the paper and football tends to send the fluid world of online media mad.

TVM for the info.

I had rather expected that might be the case. However, I had been rather taken aback by the reaction (on Twitter) from a certain, @dickiefelton, who was threatening to (quote) "im unfollowing anyone who praises Scum-newspaper-loving Crawley Town". Accordingly, since I had commended the efforts of the players and the supporters, I suggested he went ahead with his threat and returned the 'compliment' - which was a bit of a shame because (and, for all I know, you might know him) I felt he might be someone with whom I could relate (as I would like to think I have with your good self).

Anyway, although, I haven't experienced the strength of feeling from a personal point of view, on the one occasion when I have stayed in Liverpool since the disaster, I declined to buy a newspaper from a shop which had the offending rag on sale - and, for what it's worth, my own opinion is that it would make far more sense to encourage everyone to boycott all newsagents on Merseyside who sell The Sun than make meaningless gestures towards those who are unlikely to understand the sentiments involved.
