More observant readers may have noticed that the template for the rug featured in the last but one blog in this category (click on the word 'Crafty' in the blue column on the right) wasn't the rug used for the completed one. The reason for this is that, at the time that the blog was written, my wife hadn't started work on the second rug. So, now that it has been completed, here's a photo of it..........

For the eagle-eyed who wondered what the 'black bird' in a photo in a previous blog might be, it was an entry in one of the annual village scarecrow competition. Here's a video - together with an audio commentary........... Following her recent hip-replacement operation, my craftwork-crazy wife felt that she needed something to keep herself occupied during the convalescent period. So, taking advantage of the fact that we had a few empty sacks (which had previously held nuts or seeds for the local wildlife) and an assortment of materials which had seen better days, she decided to have a go at making a rag-rug. After opening out and marking a pattern on the sackcloth (below - top left) and cutting the aforementioned materials into the small strips (below - top right), she set about weaving a rug using the wooden peg (below - bottom left). The reverse side of the completed rug can be seen (below - bottom right). Click on photos to enlarge.     The front side is shown below. The photo doesn't really show the depth of the rug. However, take it from me, it's extremely comfortable to stand on......  In response to the interest shown in my wife's talents, here's some other stuff she's produced over the years.......          Those who can remember my wife's contributions towards the village scarecrow competition in recent times will know that she's a dab hand a handicraft. Here are a couple of those scarecrows (below left) together with a dragonfly brooch (centre) and some replica Crown jewels (right) which she has also made over the years. n.b. most of the following photos can be enlarged by 'clicking' on them.    Her speciality and favourite craft is called decoupage - which involves decorating a surface or an object with paper cut-outs which are then varnished as illustrated by these kitchen cupboards she did a few years ago (below).   Which brings me to her latest creation - a kitchen chair decorated to illustrate some of the animals who visit our garden (click to enlarge) .....      For the second year running, the contest for making the best scarecrow at the local village's annual flower show has been won by my better half (she's the one without the hat, BTW).  Actually, scaring crows wasn't part of the equation - as the verse explains.......  .........In fact, the hat served as a nest.  |
